Jackery explorer 2000 pro review: a bigger, better portable power station

Honor earth day with jackery’s solar generator pro family

Functional Components:

On the functional side of things, the Jackery Power Pro is very easy to use.

That’s because the powering and charging ports have a power button to activate that certain part of the Jackery Power Pro. So the two USB ports have a power button that you can press to activate the USB charging.

The two DC Ports and the 12V Outlet have a power button that you can press to activate them too. The AC Outlet has a power button labeled “AC” above it that you must press to activate it.

Each of the powering and recharging options has a light next to each of them to show that it has been activated and if the light is off then it has not been activated.

At the front, the Jackery Power Pro is where you’re going to find an LCD power button to turn on the LCD. By pressing the “Display” button, the LCD turns on to show the Input and Output power that’s present at the moment in real-time. The display also shows the power capacity that the charger has left and it shows it in increments of 20%.

From the top and to the bottom, the battery logo is labeled like this:

  • Full
  • 80
  • 60
  • 40
  • 20

Above the DC Ports is where there’s a LED flashlight that can be turned on via a button right next to the flashlight. It’s a bright flashlight that can be useful if you’re out in the woods and need a flashlight.

What The Jackery PowerPro Solar Power Station Is Meant To Power Or Can Power (Awesomely)

When buying a portable solar generator (or any other generator for that matter), it is usually a smart idea to have a clue as to the rated power of such a generator so that you do not abuse it or (on rare occasions), consciously under use it to your detriment.

This is when terminologies like Watt Hours (Wh); Watts and Amperes (Amp) comes in.

Sadly however, most of these jargon are completely lost to non-professionals who are simply interested in getting a smart portable power station that will serve their energy needs as they arise.

This is where we distinguish ourselves with this break down – offered in all our solar generator reviews on this site.

So, for the 500Wh PowerPro, what exactly is it good for, power wise?

1. Smart Phones

The very first gadget that this solar power station can juice up in an awesome manner and is in fact meant to power is a smart phone – one of the most indispensable gadgets of the 21st century.

Whether at home, on the road or in camp/the wild, this portable unit will keep not only your cellphones charged – but that of your partner and friends too.

To keep this into perspective, a fully charged 500Wh PowerPro generator will traditionally power a regular smartphone at least 45 times!

However, this is on the assumption that the generator is not plugged into any source of recharging while it is powering the phones.

If you’re badass and decide to charge your smartphones only when the unit is plugged to the solar panel that ensures that the solar generator itself is recharged while in use, you will certainly have an infinite supply of power from the generator that no number of smartphones will be able to diminish!

This, we must admit, is quite an impressive feat for any solar generator (to achieve).

2. Tablets

Thanks to Apple, Amazon and Samsung, tablets are almost as common as smartphones today, with almost every adult who owns a smartphone also owning one.

With such massive acceptance, it only makes sense that portable solar generators cater for them in the best manner possible.

Fortunately, this Jackery PowerPro is prepped to charge tablets (directly, via USB or via the AC port) in a smart and efficient manner.

For regular tablets like Apple’s iPad and Amazon’s Kindle Reader, this Jackery solar generator under review here can recharge them up to 15 times over, without needing a recharge itself.

If the user is smart enough and plugs the generator to the solar panel that supplies power to the generator whilst it recharges, an almost infinite supply of power is guaranteed to the tablets connected.

3. Other Light Gadgets/Devices

It is practically impossible to name all the gadgets and devices that this portable solar generator can recharge or provide enough juice to power.

However, to further guide you (and point you in the right direction), the unit can power:

  • 12V/5W lights for 100+ hours.
  • A mini fridge for about 10 hours.
  • A plasma TV for about 5 hours.
  • Recharge a laptop between 4-7 recharges.
  • Recharge the batteries of a simple drone upwards of 7 recharges.
  • Recharge a digital camera about 30 times and
  • Recharge the GoPro about 100 times over.

Please, note that these are general averages that are dependent on the actual power consumption of the unit in question, hence the range (as in the case of a laptop).

Also, it is important to note that loads like the TV and the mini fridge cannot be powered infinitely even with the connection of the solar panel to the generator and actual recharge of the generator’s batteries.

However, this limitation notwithstanding, plugging the loaded unit to an exposed solar panel is one of the smartest way to increase run-time, irrespective of the load in question.

Design and features

The Jackery Portable Power Station is a perfect blend of portability, practicality and durability. Its internal powerhouse will keep you going for days in terms of mobile device power, and it weighs only a relatively portable 22 lbs, despite packing in a massive battery. The range of output options built-in mean you can connect to just about any electronically-powered device you can think of, and three AC outlets mean you can power multiple appliances at once if you want to spend your juice on running a lightweight outdoor kitchen — albeit not for a super long time at that kind of power draw.

Jackery’s Explorer series features durable and attractive (insofar as any utility device is ever that attractive) exterior impact-resistant plastic housings, and they definitely feel like they don’t need to be treated with kid gloves. The display is legible and clear, and provides all the info you need at a glance in terms of reserve power, and power expenditure for connected devices, as well as charging info when plugged in.

The many charging options are also super convenient, and that’s where the SolarSaga 100W panes come in. These fold up to roughly the size of a folding camp side table, and have integrated handles for even easier carrying. They’re also protected outside by a tough polycarbonate shell, and the panels are resistant to high temperatures for max durability. They come with included output converter cables for connecting to USB A and USB C devices, and can be used with the adapter included with the Power Station to charge that either in tandem with one another, or on their own.

Around back you’ll find adjustable kickstands, which allow you to angle the panels towards the sun across a range of positions for maximum energy absorption. Between these and the Explorer Power Station you have everything you need to set up your own fully mobile solar energy power generation station in just a few minutes and with minimal effort.

Pros and Cons

As with other portable power stations, the Jackery Explorer 160 does have its pros and cons. This is why we’re going to shed light on the positive and negative aspects of this model. So you could easily decide whether this product is worth your money or not.

Jackery Explorer 160 Pros

Multiple charging options: As stated earlier, the Explorer 160 offers one USB C and two USB A ports. The USB C port will come in handy to charge modern electronics whereas the USB A port will juice up slightly dated devices.

Lithium-ion battery: Apart from having hundreds of recharging cycles, lithium-ion batteries have a lower self-discharge rate and higher energy density. This means they can retain their charge for months while also offering better power efficiency.

Noise-free operation: How many portable power stations can produce as much power as the Explorer 160 yet operate as quietly? Not many, especially once you factor in this product’s budget asking price.

Displays remaining battery life: Would you invest in a power station that goes dead without giving as much as a warning? Neither do we. That’s why I prefer the Explorer 160 as it has dedicated a large portion of its display to show remaining battery life.

Generous warranty and moneyback guarantee: Both the power station and the battery are warrantied for two years from the day of purchase. A 30-day moneyback guarantee also backs them. What more can you ask for!

Jackery Explorer 160 Cons

Smaller output of the USB C port: When compared with the Jackery 1000, whose USB C port offers 60W output, the Explorer 600’s USB C’s 30W output seems meager. Even if you didn’t know of the fact, you’d have become aware of it. How? Your USB-C devices would take an eternity to fully charge.

Limited to powering lightweight devices: Who knew a budget power station won’t be able to juice up heavy-duty devices? I do. And I suggest that you don’t try to charge products like electric drills, hair dryers, and blenders with the Explorer 160.

Relatively lower charging capacity: Here’s an example of this model’s lean charging capacity. While the EcoFlow Delta can charge a 13-inch MacBook Pro as many as 20 times in one charge, the Explorer 160 can charge the same product only twice.

CONS

So, who is the Jackery Explorer 2000 Pro for?

The Jackery Explorer 2000 Pro is an incredible value for anyone who regularly needs lots of sustainable power. Nick Hilden

The Jackery Explorer 2000 Pro is an incredibly versatile portable power station/solar generator. If you need a lot of compact current, it will work wonders for you. Given its size—portable for a generator, but still over 40 pounds—it makes more sense for vanlifers, road trippers, and long-term campers than for your average camping trip (unless you really expect to recharge your phone 260 times). It’s also a great option for backup power for people who live in blackout-prone areas or on an off-grid worksite. While the full six solar panel setup might prove unwieldy and dissuade you from maximizing its hyper-fast recharge time, it’s still the easiest, most powerful solar generator we’ve tried.

Performance

  • Up to 1800W output
  • Long-lasting power

Although the EcoFlow Delta 2 has a maximum supported output of 2400W, the 1800W on offer by the Jackery Explorer 1500 Pro is enough for most appliances. I ran an electric heater (at its ~1800W setting), which worked perfectly, although the short run time of under an hour probably isn’t enough to keep anywhere warm for long.

That said, the De’Longhi Capsule Desk heater uses just 350W, so the Jackery Explorer 1500 could power this for over four hours.

Rather, the 1800W limit shows a useful capacity for running multiple devices, whether you want to plug in a traditional, brighter, lamp, or connect up a projector. For most typical uses, there’s a load of power here: running a portable projector, for example, the Jackery Explorer 1500 Pro could last for six hours.

That’s good news if you want to watch an epic film, such as the extended cut of one of the Lord of the Rings films, while you’re out and about.

To get a rough idea of the value of this power station, we have to look at the rated number of charge cycles until the battery capacity is reduced to 80% of their initial rating of 1512Wh.

According to Jackery, the Explorer 1500 supports 1000 cycles before 80%, which is a third of the EcoFlow Delta’s. Over the Explorer 1500’s 1000 cycles, it will have held around 1512kWh of power. At the Explorer’s current price of £1499, that works out to 99p per kWh stored, which is roughly three times the price of the EcoFlow Delta.

Add in the cost to put electricity in, at 34p per kWh, and the total rises to £1.33 per kWh of power.

It’s a slight simplification of things, as the Jackery Explorer 1500 Pro will continue to run after 1000 cycles, only its capacity will continue to diminish. What my figures do is a like-for-like comparison between devices.

Add in the solar panels, and the 1000 cycles would effectively cost an additional 42p per kWh of power. Of course, the solar panels will continue to work past that point, but the aim of these calculations is to show like-for-like costs. It also demonstrates that solar panels only become cost effective, compared to taking power from a power socket, over a long period of time.

Overall, the Jackery Explorer 1500 Pro is about average for a power station, but there are longer-life models available.

Is the Jackery 3000 Pro portable or not?

The extending handle and integrated wheels make this power station easy to lug around. Nick Hilden

I suspect that the biggest question many potential buyers will be mulling involves portability. The Jackery 3000 Pro isn’t exactly lightweight, but its clever suitcase design makes it very portable. For how much capacity it offers, it’s not actually all that heavy—only about 30% heavier than the Jackery half its capacity. About the size of two stacked shoeboxes, it doesn’t eat up a lot of space. And as I mentioned above, its wheels, extending tow handle, and integrated handles make it easy to move around. On top of all that, its perfectly boxed design with no protruding parts makes it a snap to fit into any camper setup. Its lack of protrusions prevents it from getting caught up as you move it in and out of storage.

Less convenient is the SolarSaga 200W, which is a bit unwieldy to deploy as it takes time to get them unfurled and free-standing. There’s not much getting around that, however. The only alternative is to use the smaller SolarSaga 100s, which are easier to set up but require more panels or time in the sun to collect the same amount of wattage. You’ll have to decide which of those slight inconveniences you prefer.

All in all, the Jackery 3000 Pro is one of the best high-capacity solar generators available. I, for one, look forward to including it in my next van build.

What Are the Dimensions?

The dimensions are (in Length by Width, by Depth): 15.2 inches by 10.5 inches, by 12.1 inches. If you use centimeters that is 38.4 centimeters by 26.90 centimeters by 30.75 centimeters.

If this is too big, looking at once like the Jackery Explorer 240 is a good idea. It can’t power big equipment and kitchen appliances like refrigerators, but if you just need a no-hassle charging port that doesn’t take too much storage space on your trips and has multiple outputs, this is a great option.

There is also the Jackery Solar Generator 1000, which is a little lighter and smaller, but still has a fair amount of power. The dimensions of the solar panels are 21.2 by 24.2 by 1.6 inches folded up while they are 21.3 by 91.3 by 1 inch unfolded.

Other Notable Features

Jackery Explorer 160 (see image) is a small and compact solar power station (dimensions 7.4″ x 6.7″ x 4.5″)

Other noteworthy features of Jackery Explorer 160 include:

Powers a CPAP machine

One of the biggest selling points of the Jackery Explorer 160, especially for users who don’t want to compromise on their sleep in the outdoors, is that it can easily power a CPAP machine. This makes it an excellent device for those who need a device to help them fall doze off fairly quickly.

Small LCD screen

On the user-facing side of the Explorer 160 – between the plug-in connections and the USB ports – is a black and white LCD screen. You can turn it on/off by pressing the ‘Display’ button right next to it. It displays useful information such as the remaining battery %age and the input and output power.

Flashlight with SOS feature

The Explorer 160 comes with a built-in flashlight. It is bright enough to illuminate a large-size campsite at once. The light also features an SOS mode. You can use it to send signals to your traveling party in dangerous and threatening situations.

Carrying case for charging cables

I have already stated that the Explorer 160 comes with four charging cables. You might have found it difficult to store them, had it not been for the carrying case. One which contains zippers and side pockets to ensure that you don’t lose the charging cables anytime soon.

Jackery Explorer 2000 Pro Testing

Having used and reviewed the Jackery Solar Power Generators before, I already knew what they were capable of. I’ve powered TVs, laptops, phones, and tablets with the Jackery Power Stations, with great success in the past. In all of those uses, my time or need always ran out before the battery in the Jackery did. Sure, I could power a few random devices with the Explorer 2000 as a test, but this time, however, I wanted to do a bit more…I really wanted to push this unit to its limits.

The Texas heat gave me a great opportunity to see what the Jackery Explorer 2000 Pro could do, and I wanted to hammer this thing with a full power draw. I rolled a Toshiba portable air conditioning unit that draws 1400 watts out into the 100-degree heat. I plugged the AC unit into the Jackery 2000, and just let it run.

As it was outside, there was no danger of it ever getting cool enough to shut down or even back off the power. The result was a non-stop run at 1400 watts for a full 88-minutes. During this time, the Jackery also had its own internal fan running, to keep its internal battery cool. We were operating just barely under the 104 degree recommended limit stated by Jackery. It was hot outside.

The resulting time and power draw fit comfortably within the stated use metrics that Jackery claimed. In other words, the Jackery Explorer 2000 Pro performed as expected, as claimed, even under near-extreme conditions. Campers and RVers will use the Jackery 2000 Pro in a variety of ways. The above scenario isn’t practical, nor is it a real-world scenario RVers might find themselves creating, so let’s look at some that are.

Jackery Solar Generator 1500 Pro

  • 2-hour charge time
  • 8 ports
  • 1,800 W
  • 1,534Wh capacity
  • 37.4 lbs.

The Power

To clarify, the Jackery Solar Generator 1500 Pro combines a Jackery Explorer Pro 1500 portable power station with up to six SolarSaga 200W solar panels. The Explorer remains the powerhouse of the combo, while the panels provide the power source.

If you already own the brand’s SolarSaga 200W solar panels, you can upgrade with just the Jackery Explorer 1500 Pro portable power station and still use it with your existing panels.

With a full arrayof six SolarSaga solar panels, the Jackery Explorer 1500 Pro can fully charge via sunlight in 2 hours. That’s how long it takes when it’s plugged into a standard wall outlet.

The Jackery Explorer 1500 Pro has enough output to run appliances like electric stoves, air conditioners, and small refrigerators. It can run power tools for remote projects as well.

The Outlets

As noted, the Jackery Explorer 1500 Pro can run 8 things at once. Of course, that doesn’t mean eight microwaves simultaneously, but a mix of household appliances and smaller gadgets.

First off, four ports support the relatively low demand for USB devices. There are two USB-C ports and two USB-A ports fast-charging ports.

Then there’s one 12v outlet like you’d find in a car. This can recharge camera batteries, drones, or even a small electric refrigerator.

Lastly, there are three 1,800W AC ports, like wall outlets, to power the larger appliances.

Add-On Solar

Getting the most from a Jackery Explorer 1500 Pro portable power station means hooking it up to one to six SolarSaga 200W solar panels. The Explorer power station can handle up to 1,400W solar power input while charging, which is how it gets down to a 2-hour charge time with all panels connected.

These Jackery solar panels can convert up to 25% of solar rays into energy. If that doesn’t sound like a lot, you’ll find that sits among performers in the portable power space. The brand claims these panels also perform above average in cloudy conditions and extreme heat.

The Build

The Explorer 1500 Pro portable power station weighs just over 37 pounds. That probably weighs less than the cooler you’d pack for a weekend trip, and take up less room, too. The brand estimates it weighs 20% lighter than comparable power stations. The station includes a foldable handle, to make it more compact when packed away.

(Photo/Jackery)

Regulated Power

One concern with batteries includes getting too much juice at once. Power surges can damage charging devices or the battery itself.

Jackery generators have a Battery Management System to help them balance demand from multiple devices without getting overpowered. The system includes a dozen forms of protection, including against over-voltage and short circuits. Its cooling system runs two chips and eight temperature sensors to monitor output.

Staying Power

Jackery says the Explorer 1500 Pro portable power station will fully charge for 2,000 cycles and then drop to roughly 70% capacity, and dwindle down from there. It backs its portable power stations with a 5-Year warranty.

The station’s shell is made from fireproof material and passes safety drop standards.

  • Power ports: 2 USB power ports & 1 AC power port.
  • Power output: Pure Sine Wave.

We found these specs basic – and enough for emergency use, especially for the occasional/non-heavy user who intends to either use this unit on the road or at home.

Let’s now take a look at its features – the realm where this portable power station truly excelled.

Is The Jackery 1000 Pro Worth Buying?

In our view, the Jackery 1000 Pro is an excellent model which performs well against other generators in its class and is realistically priced. While $1,500 USD is certainly not cheap, the fact is that cutting edge outdoor technology comes with a premium. However, if you buy the Jackery 1000 Pro at Amazon using the link below, then you can get 15% off. Or even better if you buy it directly from Jackery then that discount increases to 20% an incredible saving of $300.

Operation and display

The Jackery Explorer 1000 Pro has a small screen that displays plenty of details. This provides you with all the necessary information at a glance. Unfortunately, there is no supporting app from Jackery. Thus, Jackery had to install physical buttons on the power station, which are unfortunately difficult to feel without looking at it. The existing LED light only helps to a certain extent.

What I liked:

  • Detailed, clear screen.
  • Power saving function is available.

What I disliked:

  • Buttons are difficult to feel in the dark.
  • LED light with three brightness levels is hardly of any help in the dark.
  • No supporting app.

The power station has a small, detailed display that provides you information about the input and output power, how long the power station still needs to charge, how long a connected device can be charged for, and the remaining battery life the power station has. The display also warns you whenever the mercury drops too low or jumps too high. The display is always perfectly legible in the review, even when under direct sunlight.

The display provides you with ample information even under direct sunlight. / NextPit

Unfortunately, Jackery does without a supporting app, which inevitably led Jackery to install several physical buttons for operation. This brings us to our primary complaint. This is especially noticeable when you use the power station at night, since the buttons are quite difficult to feel in the dark.

Jackery PowerPro 500Wh Portable Solar Power Station: First Look

The Jackery PowerPro 500Wh portable power station, on first look, is a relatively small and ordinary looking solar power enabled power generating unit.

From its height of about 10 inches, there is also nothing about the unit to indicate that it can be powered by solar technology.

As a matter of fact, there is absolutely nothing about the unit that indicates that it is a portable solar generator, capable of juicing up electronics and even providing enough power to keep even fridges running.

All that changes when you turn around the unit and pull off the cover that shields the AC port, revealing a nice AC port that is, as a matter of fact, the first giveaway that the unit is capable of providing power or keeping your important electronics juiced up as the need arises.

One will however be completely pardoned for thinking that the unit is not a powerful solar generator that is capable of providing stored electricity on demand: the generator itself is (relatively) small, portable and importantly, brightly colored in a black and orange manner, making it look ‘chic and cute’.

However, before you get ideas that the generator is ‘too cute’ for any serious work, the intimidating power button and a smart LCD display screen are conspicuously positioned as a reminder that the generator is, afterall, capable of serious business – if the need calls.

CONS

Here Comes The Sun

The Jackery Solar Generator would be an excellent portable-power solution, but coupling it with high-capacity solar panels makes the unit ideal for backup power and power on the go.

The Jackery Solar Generator 1500 Pro costs $2,699 for the power unit and the 200W solar panel. This isn’t inexpensive, but to put it in context, a Honda 1800W gas-powered generator costs $1,200 and spews fumes.

Are There Alternatives?

Jackery isn’t the only company making solar-driven generators. Electronics maker Anker, for instance, has several systems at a lower price: the Anker 767 system is a 2048Wh generator with two 200W solar panels and costs $2,899. Its closest matching unit to the 1500W Jackery is Anker’s 1229 Wh model, which comes with three 100W solar panels and is $2,000.

I can’t compare the build of the Anker system to that of Jackery since I’ve never used the former, though the company is known for its high-quality accessories.
