TomTom Bandit: Video quality

The Bandit can’t quite match the top-end GoPro in terms of maximum resolution — it offers 4K filming at 15fps compared with 4K at 30fps — which means to get footage that’s smooth and watchable you’ll need to go down to 2.7K or 1080p.

That’s no disaster though, unless you’re projecting your footage on a souped-up home cinema setup. For YouTube, Facebook and the vast majority of television sets out there, this will look just fine.

We tested the Bandit in a variety of situations and it passed with flying colours: footage was smooth, bright and detailed, and while it struggles in low light, that’s to be expected — this isn’t a DSLR you’re buying. Quick changes in lighting were handled well, however.

The footage we captured was certainly as good as that filmed by a 2013 GoPro Hero 3+ Black we had to hand, using the same quality settings. The Bandit also features slow-motion modes (1080p at 60fps, 720p at 120fps or WVGA at 180fps) and a time-lapse feature — in both cases the camera’s capable of getting very good results.

Overall, we were impressed with the video quality of the Bandit. Sure, footage was occasionally pixelated or blurred, but this is an action cam you can fit in the palm of your hand, after all — there are plenty of example videos on YouTube you can pore over, and the Bandit holds its own against most of its current rivals.

Снизу, кроме штативной резьбы, в наличии также защелка для выталкивания аккумулятора. Ещё один интересный факт — в комплекте есть две прозрачные крышечки — для комплекта с экраном и без. Правда, вот непонятна логика производителей в том плане, что девайсу без экрана прозрачное покрытие ни к чему. Режим автостарта идёт на g-сенсорной основе, кнопка его активации расположена на передней части камеры. По соседству с ней переключатель «вкл/выкл». В аквабоксе со стандартным креплением AEE S71 имеет солидный внушительный вид. По заявкам производителей, она способна погрузиться на глубину около 100 метров. Но, пользование камерой в аквабоксе скрывает за собой некоторые недостатки, например, её банально нельзя включить либо выключить. Да, камере свойственно переходить в режим сна после временной неактивности, но с точки зрения экономии заряда и практичности — это, отнюдь, не выгодно и даже в некотором роде глупо. И пару слов о габаритах: вес устройства 84 грамма, ширина — 60 мм, длина — 43 мм, ну и глубина — 35 мм.
Видео, фото, дисплей. Камера Aee S71T Plus оборудована матрицей CMOS и имеет в своём распоряжении 16 Мп. Она поддерживает разрешение 1080P, позволяющее снимать 20, 30, 48, 60 кадров в секунду и разрешение 2.7K с 30 кадрами в секунду. А вот желаемое 4К — 15 кадров/сек, что даёт возможность качественно снимать только не очень динамичные сцены. Отсутствует Slow Motion — функция, позволяющая снимать замедленное видео. Зато доступен режим Time Lapse, что даёт возможность делать ускоренную съёмку медленно движущихся процессов. Камера имеет объектив с достаточно неплохой шириной углов обзора — 150 градусов и неплохой фокусировкой. Видео, снимаемое на Aee S71T Plus, получается чёткое, правда контраст страдает при максимальных углах обзора. Но как для экшн-камеры с крохотной оптикой — вполне себе ничего. Фото тоже высокого уровня, особенно при нормальном освещении. В случае, если, что-то не успели сфотографировать, то доступен режим кадрирования отснятого видео. Экран сенсорный, имеет диагональ 2.2 дюйма и в моменты, когда он не нужен, может быть отсоединен.
Разъёмы, слоты, подключение. В наличие слот для Mini USB и Mini HDMI. Доступен модуль wi-fi, а вот Bluetooth нет. Камера поддерживает micro SD до 64ГБ.
Батарея литий-ионная, имеет ёмкость 1500 мАч, что даёт возможность раскошелиться на почти 2 с половиной часа непрерывной съёмки в наивысшем разрешении.
Дополнительно невозможно не сказать пару слов об интерфейсе. Он состоит из не совсем понятных для неподготовленного человека иконок и замысловатых нелогичных обозначений. Например, значок HD — это простой выбор разрешения, а не переключение в одноименный режим, как можно было бы предположить. NF — это вовсе не нейтральный фильтр, а всего лишь значок выбора битрейта. И всё остальное тоже в таком же хитроумном роде.

Ease of use

Action cameras should be easy touse – after all, you want to be able to record spontaneous action – and the Bandit really hits the spot here. Once the camera is switched on using the Start button at the rear, a small, flashing GPS icon can be seen in the top left of the LCD; this tells you that the camera is attempting to pick upa GPS signal. In our test, we foundthat the Bandit would usually connect in less than a minute. Also alongthe top of the LCD are a microSD-card symbol showing whether ornot a card has been installed, and a battery-life indicator. The main part of the screen displays either the modeor settings, and these are navigated using a large, four-way control pad.

Performance & Operation

The back-lit screen up top is used only for menu navigation and functional switching, so there’s no live viewfinder to be found here. TomTom has included that in the app which you can read about down below. Turning the device on or off requires a press and hold of either the red button for turning on or the black stop button for turning off. Navigating this menu was super simple and is done completely via the 4-direction d-pad below the screen. The menu is a vertical one with pages to the left and right for additional options. Modes include photo, video, slow motion, time lapse and cinematic. Each of these modes has their own options including resolution, framerate, wide or normal angle video shooting and more.

The top-most menu shows the WiFi password for connecting to the camera via the app. Moving down the list you scroll over to select the mode desired. Within this page scrolling to the right again brings up the current speed traveling, how much space is left on the SD card and what your current heart rate is if you’ve got the optional sensor connected. Within each mode scrolling down brings up the available options, for instance in photo mode you can select normal or burst mode, scene type, toggle auto rotation and some more general settings that aren’t specific to the photo mode like connection status and enabling airplane mode. The menu organization makes a lot of sense and makes it really easy to find what you want.

Quality of the photos and video were pretty good although not any better or worse than other action cameras we’ve reviewed. The biggest advantage here is that, although the framerate is only 15FPS, you can actually record at 4K resolution. This enables some significantly enhanced detail and video that looks phenomenal on any display no matter how big. 2.7K mode is sort of a trade-off between 1080p and 4K, as it offers better resolution than 1080p but still retains a framerate of 30FPS to catch the action better. Actual quality of the video is quite good, with a clear, clean picture that often delivers worthwhile video in many situations. Low light performance wasn’t bad but the image continues to get softer as the light gets lower, the result of a smaller sensor and a denoise algorithm trying to clean up the image. Lack of optical image stabilization could prove a problem depending on what you’re doing, but the build of the device coupled with a well-designed housing means that the image won’t wobble around as much as some phones might.

The 16-megapixel photos are full of plenty of detail but aren’t quite as good looking as those you might find on the latest high-end Android-powered phone. That’s not to say they aren’t bad by any means, as the sensor has some good dynamic range, accurate colors and good auto light balance, but they just aren’t screaming with detail. There’s a fair bit of noise in low light and there’s no advanced modes like HDR. If nothing the pictures look more like a still frame capture from a video, so it might just be better to use the camera that way instead of trying to line up a shot without being able to see it in the first place. Verdict

The Bandit matches other action cameras on the market when it comes to video quality, however it stands out from anything else the market has ever seen with it’s revolutionary approach to fast and easy editing and ease of use with no cables or cords.

This is a fantastic action camera, highly versatile and highly creative which has been produced with the users in mind. The key difference between this and other action cameras is that you don’t have to waste hours combing though your footage to find the moments and images worth sharing.

Conclusion

The TomTom Bandit Action Camera is one seriously brilliant device. From its design to the waterproof modular construction, the built-in rechargeable battery and USB 3.0 connector, this is one seriously well-designed product. Pair that with the fact that the app does more than other action camera apps out there and you’ve got a real winner on your hands. Easy sharing straight from your mobile device to your favorite social network or cloud storage is phenomenal, and making your own videos and clips couldn’t be easier. The entry price isn’t really any less than the GoPro, but that’s OK because the TomTom Bandit isn’t trying to be some cheaper alternative for those not wanting to pluck down $400 or so on an action camera, it’s trying to replace the GoPro in every way. Those who already have GoPro accessories will find that the included adapter will fit nearly everything you’re already using, and TomTom makes a slew of additional accessories specifically built for the unique design and construction of the Bandit.

Overall this one is a real winner and gets a high recommendation from us. Those who are interested in just the camera can pick it up at Amazon for just under the $400 mark, or if you’re looking to get a little more value and pack in a bunch of accessories the Premium Pack comes in at just under $500 and will give you everything you need to start making some crazy videos.

TomTom Bandit: Image quality

Let’s not forget the Bandit also takes pictures, at a pinch. We took a bunch of photos in a variety of situations and while low light was again a problem, most of the time the Bandit exceeded our expectations (maybe our expectations were just set too low).

In general the quality is comparable to a mid-range smartphone, at least in good lighting conditions, so if you’re not going to mount these photos on your wall then the device will serve you well.

The images you can take can be up to 16-megapixels in size and there’s the option of a burst mode that snaps 10 pictures in a second — you might find that suits some stunts better than HD video. The facility is there if you need it, but no one’s really buying an action camera for its photo-taking prowess.

Like videos, photos can be transferred over the smartphone app, which is worth another mention: this really is a well-developed app. You can use it as a viewfinder with virtually no lag as well, and it’s a simple way of transferring files if you don’t want to pull out the Batt-Stick or its memory card. The camera creates a little Wi-Fi network of its own which your phone can then latch on to, and though we experienced one or two connection mishaps, it was otherwise a pleasure to use.

Finally, there’s the price: at this is just about cheap enough to appeal to the casual crowd. Price-wise it puts it on a par with the GoPro Hero4 Silver, itself only capable of the 4K 15fps maximum reach of the Bandit. So which to opt for? If you’ve no preference on shape and design, the Bandit looks like a great buy.

The App: Shake to Edit

One of the Bandit’s banner features is its mobile app with quick shake-to-edit capabilities. The idea: you pair a phone with the camera when you finish a run (while snowboarding, say), shake the phone, and the editing software will automatically cut together a one-minute video using the best parts of your run. Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, it is. But the software’s not an outright failure, either.

The hard part for the camera is determining what footage to select. You can manually add a highlight tag by pressing the red button on the camera just after the footage you want to use. But in addition to that, the Bandit uses its sensors to add highlight tags when it senses sudden accelerations or decelerations, vertical drops, changes in G forces, quick rotations, when you hit top speed, and more.

It’s a neat idea that doesn’t work that well in practice. In my testing, I found that the camera rarely (say one out of eight times) marked the highlights I wanted.

There’s also some trouble with when they’re marked. Even when the Bandit managed to automatically highlight a nice turn or jump, the six-second highlight didn’t usually capture the entire moment. You can manually adjust the clip’s length and in and out points, but that kind of defeats the purpose.

The only thing it seemed to be able to highlight regularly? My wipe-outs. I rolled with it and, using the app, was able to cut together this crash reel in less than 10 minutes on an iPhone.

You can add music from your iPhone to your video, and because the Bandit has GPS, you can add an overlay for your speed or acceleration (with more overlays coming in the future). It’s worth noting that Garmin and Sony both give you more options for overlays, but both rely on desktop editing software.

The TomTom app also has a live-view mode, which can be used to frame your shot.

Note: The app is currently available only for iOS. An Android version is in the works, but it sounds like it will be more limited. For instance, you won’t be able to add the speed overlay. A PC version is coming at some point, too.

Specs and Accessories

TomTom has covered most of the required bases here when it comes to action camera specs. HD video recording at 1080p 60FPS is essentially the maximum best resolution, although there are 720p 120FPS, 2.7k 30FPS and 4K 15FPS modes available here too. The wide-angle lens and 16-megapixel sensor deliver good image quality for both video and pictures, and the battery is rated at 3 hours of recording. Multiple built-in sensors include speed, g-force, altitude, rotation and there’s also a separately sold heartbeat sensor. A GoPro mount is included to retrofit onto any existing GoPro accessories you might have, and of course the app on your iOS or Android powered device does all sorts of cool things.

Besides giving you compatibility with a wide range of GoPro accessories, TomTom also sells its own lineup as well. This includes basic surface mounts, tripod, wrist mount, pole mount, handle bar mount, board mount and 360-degree pitch mount. To better protect the camera the lens is interchangeable and there’s even a floating case so the camera doesn’t sink to the bottom every time. Last but not least there’s also a remote shutter button that wraps around your wrist for convenient recording, as well as the aforementioned heart rate sensor to add additional excitement to videos.

TomTom App

The Bandit is the first ever camera to come with a built-in media server, eliminating the need to download footage before being able to edit it. The camera makes editing and sharing videos quick and easy. Instead of spending hours downloading and sorting through your footage, you can create an exciting edit and share it within moments of capturing the action, simply by shaking your smartphone.

“We know that the biggest frustration people have with action cameras today is the time and effort it takes to edit,” says Corinne Vigreux, co-founder and managing director, TomTom Consumer. “With TomTom Bandit we’ve cut the editing time down from hours to minutes – all it takes is a shake!”

“We took a simple, but radical approach to solving the editing problem,” says Slobodan Stanisic, lead engineer, TomTom. “With all existing action cameras you first need to download gigabytes of footage to a powerful PC, a process that can take a long time. Then you need to find the highlights, put together a story and format it. We know this often takes hours. Not with the TomTom Bandit. We have designed a camera where the footage is processed on the camera itself, making the editing process far easier and much faster.”

The TomTom Bandit works seamlessly with the smartphone app, which includes a superfast viewfinder. Footage can be reviewed instantly with the app thanks to the built-in media server. In editing mode, a simple shake of the smartphone instantly creates an exciting movie. You can then easily make changes, add music and add overlays of metrics, such as speed, heart rate, etc., before sharing online.

TomTom went above and beyond to make make the video editing and sharing process as simplistic as possible and did an excellent job in doing so. With the built in server on the Bandit and a connected smartphone you now have the ability to edit and share a high quality video in minutes, rather than waiting to get to your computer, download the footage and spend hours editing it and probably posting it days later when all the excitement has worn off. This is a absolutely huge feature and one of the top selling points of the TomTom Bandit.

Прежде чем более детально рассмотреть данное мобильное приложение, нужно обратить внимание еще на одну неотъемлемую часть функциональности камеры. В камере, наряду с Wi-Fi и Bluetooth, располагаются датчики движения и модуль GPS

В процессе съёмки автоматически проставляются теги с указанием скорости вашего движения, высоты, перегрузок и частоты сердечных сокращений (при условии, что вы разместите на себе внешний ремень сердечного ритма Bluetooth). Также, теги выставляются на крутое ускорение, замедление и вертикальный спуск. К сожалению, данные с GPS-навигатора и датчиков движения никогда не сохраняются, поэтому вы не сможете, к примеру, использовать GPS для определения точного маршрута мотоцикла.

Когда вы соедините свою камеру Bandit с мобильным устройством, то сможете рассмотреть все эти теги в своих видео роликах. Если Вы хотите добавить тег «Важный момент» (highlight), просто нужно нажать на «звездочку» над видео при его воспроизведении. Вы остановились, тег не включился, и вы забыли нажать «звездочку», не беда при воспроизведении в приложении можно нажать на значок в нужный момент и тег добавится автоматически.
Таким же образом вы можете создать историю из меню приложения для построения фильма. Вы можете вручную выбрать любой тег, который захотите использовать для своего видео, или просто встряхнуть свой смартфон или планшет.
Когда ваш фильм будет на стадии окончания, нажмите на иконку «Поделиться» на экране и камера начнет обрабатывать клипы и передавать их на ваш телефон в качестве готового фильма.

Первые впечатления от TomTom Bandit

Предупреждения о том, что установка камеры приведет к «ведению» от ветра, но при наличии хорошей защиты это оказалось совершенно несущественно. Если бы поставил сверху, то скорее всего бы почувствовалось.

Видео вроде не ужасно, а вот звук оставляет желать лучшего. Есть «борода» для прикрытия микрофона, но помогает только на низких скоростях, так что толку мало. TomTom продает и внешний микрофон, на который, правда, народ жалуется, а вот подключить уже готовый по Bluetooth возможности нет. Обидно, но пока как-нибудь так.

Делать полноценные выводы еще рано, но как по мне, то вариант «а-ля попробовать» вполне. За полную цену я, пожалуй бы, не брал, но учитывая, что достался он мне за «полцены» GoPro HERO4, я «дал себя уболтать».
